How Successful Was Your Travel With Your Autistic Adult Child Who Suffers From Severe Meltdowns?
We are planning a family reunion and would like advice on travel in an airplane. Info on recent travels is what I am looking for. We want to go to New York next year and would like to start planning. Any advice, travel info, best times to leave from Chicago, which airline, benefits for disabled people would be greatly appreciated.
We just took a road 13 hr road trip because we were hesitant for a plane ride and son lives riding in vehicles. He refused to stay in the hotel room the first night. Screaming and crying and it was a small hotel so my husband had to sleep in the car with him. Total disaster. The other hotel was a big one so he was a little calmer and stayed the night there. So I guess the point is trial and error?
Hello
My family went to Florida few years back and planning another trip. I used a melatonin to calm him and let him sleep it was a 2hr flight. He was fine when he woke up. Also ask for early boarding due to special needs. I got seats in front as he hated to wait to get off.
Good luck
@Samala-Thank you for that information. I really wish I could drive for 13 hours but I am the only transportation and nobody else has traveled for that length of time. Also, in July, we took the twins for a staycation at Navy Pier in Chicago and we stayed at the Sable Hilton Hotel. The very first night one twin screamed all night. Good thing the hotel room was huge and we were all in the one room and ended up that first night not being able to sleep, and almost slept the whole second day away but we recovered and still had a good time. Trial and error is right.
I took Stephen to the Toledo zoo once, and as long as He was distracted it went well. He was too busy to fuss much while at the zoo, and the trip back home I had a new movie for Him, 'The Good Dinosaur', and He was distracted the whole trip back.
