Non Verbal Watching Shows In Different Languages Is That Ok?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My daughter is 6yrs old and non verbal. She's beginning to mumble alot and repeat words. She loves to watch shows in different languages. Will this hinder her from learning her primary language first?

Thank you so much! I will let her continue exploring because when we speak to her she understands very well. I was more concerned when it comes to school and testing. Right now we are homeschooling until we find the perfect school. I really appreciate the feedback and knowing there are other families out there that understand ours. β™ΎοΈπŸ™

Hello there! My son is non verbal as well! Spanish is our first language. When my son was younger, we were told that speaking to him in Spanish would confuse him. Honestly, I’m glad I did not listen to that advice. My son can follow instructions in both languages. Some of our family members are not bilingual, at least our son is able to understand what they say to him. When in comes to homeschooling, I stick to English since that is the language he gets his testing done in.

I hope this helps!

My son is 4yrs old. He switches everything on his tablet from English, Chinese, Spanish, and I forgot what else. He does this all day long. I just let him. No way to stop him it would be a battle daily and I am not trying to make him miserable. :)

My non-verbal 10 year old really likes listening to other languages. I figure that any language is stimulating the parts of the brain used in language. It can only help.

My daughter likes to use google translate to hear words in Korean or Japanese. No one in our house speaks those language. She can tell if someone is speaking Chinese, Korean or Japanese. It's kind of useless but she can spell and read English quite well.
