Is It Confusing For People With Nonverbal Autism To Be Exposed To Sign Language And Pictures?.......
My son's teacher told me he did not want to sign today. He did not want to sign over Spring Break but frequently grabbed my hand and brought it to the item...... He has been working on signs since August. He has picked up 3, but they are trying to use about 7 and I worry it may be too much for him. When he was 4 or so, I felt like he was making really good progress with pictures. His private speech therapist changed jobs and his insurance did not approve an ACC device and he regressed..... Communication, no matter how basic is Communication, and that's what he needs. Encourage as many alternate ways as possible, but never ignore any Communication.
I just wanted to add that communication is more than just saying words. My son would never be able to have a conversation with me, the way I talk to my husband or to our daughter. We never tried sign language, but at school they used the pics and the acc device. What I am focusing now that he’s being homeschooled is labeling and counting. Kids who are considered non verbal are really observant, they know more than what we think they do. Some time ago, I asked my son to give me to 2 oranges from the fridge, and he did. I also ask him questions about what he really knows, at least that allows me to hear his voice. My son is a visual learner and what has worked for him the most are flash cards.
I hope you and your family have a blessed day today!
Dang sorry to hear about the AAC device:( ashley tried sign language since age 1 and last year her therapist said shes just not getting it so we stopped I know lots kids pick it up unfortunately Ash did not. We also tried pecs for couple yrs she couldn't pick that up either... When she was in pre school i actually made my own picture cards of her eating, her sippy cup, different parks etc..and had the pictures laminated. This she could understand more than the pecs actually still use my picture cards still sometimes cuz ashley doesn't know how to use the aac device yet. Maybe try making these if he has trouble with pecs. I think it should be ok being exposed to both if he seems overwhelmed than probably stick to one.
Hi Allison! My daughter was diagnosed with non verbal autism at 4, and will be 10 soon. Learning to sign was a bit tricky for her too and pictures really helped. Thankfully we were approved for a AAC device through her school. Try everything you can to get that device for your kid it is a game changer. But until then I say try using more visual pics. It seems like he may be picking up more on that by what you described in your post.... hope this helps!
Use whatever communication you can. I still use picture menus with my kids even though they are verbal. The online ordering at restaurants has been a godsend. They can order and customize by picture. Far less drama over food.
