So a lot of people have suggested aba therapy to us but unfortunately we live in a rural area where I drive 1 hour away for speech and ot therapy.Aba therapy I was told is atleast 10hrs could be more depending ..does school excuse this? Has anyone had experience with this?is school better or should aba therapy be the way to go I really want the least restrictive environment for my son and wondering if aba is worth it?as I would have to drive out an hour away and he would be missing a lot of… read more
School will likely excuse it but will want you to return the child to school after your therapy is over. You will need documentation. I have seen where the schools use therapy absences to give the kids less services at school and say they are absent all the time. ABA does wonders for a lot of kids. My personal experience in a rural area with a long drive from a rural area is that the therapy was stressful for my son, the drive was stressful. Eventually he would fight getting in the car and every thing about it. Also eventually we got dropped from ABA for attendance because if he was sick or hadn't slept the drive was too much but the place was not understanding. That was my personal experience. I am sure other people have had different ones, some better and some worse. Good luck to you with your experience and decision.
When my son transitioned to the school district at age 3, his ABA was scheduled after school at home. I am trying to remember how many hours…I believe it was one hour, M-F. Then the team set up a meeting in the middle of his first grade school year (6 years old). The team decided he no longer needed it because his behavior improved and didn’t affect his ability to learn. He went from unable to focus and protesting, to stimming and asking for breaks.
That being said, ABA isn’t for everyone. But it helped my son.
You can try it out and see how u guys like :) if doesn't work for you guys than drop it
I didn't like any of the aba clinics personally i do special ed kindergarten for my daughter and she gets all her services at school
Goodluck!
I'm not a fan of ABA. It didn't work for us. Send your child to school and see what therapies they offer.
