So we recently moved from a house to apartment. And our 4yro son has been opening the door but would never leave. So we had asked the management if we could put an extra lock (they knew about our situation with out son. At first the lady said yes had me sign

Most of my doors have child locks. They sell at target. Most of my doors have these since my daughter kept leaving my apartment. They dont cost much. I hope that helps.

We have a slide lock on our son's bedroom door. We also put some bells (quite loud jingle bells used to play music) around door handles and at his bedroom window. (He's already jumped out once before) It's loud enough to alarm us. We purchased them at a hobby shop. There are also some alarms sold at hardware stores that you can put behind doors.

Make sure your local police and rescue units are aware of your son and give them an updated picture of him every year.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, yes. You can also ask them if there is more from you that they might need. They might offer to patrol your street. Sometimes the school will offer an information card with your child's picture and their stats on it when they get school pictures taken.

We moved earlier this year too and the door situation had me in anxiety too. We ended up getting a slide lock chain (Amazon) and installed it ourselves. All it took was screwing onto the door and frame. We also bought snap hooks and put them at the tops of doors/closets/windows, to prevent my son from being able to roam freely at night, and a high baby gate blocking off the kitchen. Amazon sells these two piece magnetic alarms that are quite small, they are activated when the pieces are separated. People put them on doors and windows. I think its important to combine teaching/reinforcing safety mixed with the supports in place. My son right now acts like a bouncer when the baby gate is open, and will close to himself! Good luck mama!
