Most of my doors have child locks. They sell at target. Most of my doors have these since my daughter kept leaving my apartment. They dont cost much. I hope that helps.

We have a slide lock on our son's bedroom door. We also put some bells (quite loud jingle bells used to play music) around door handles and at his bedroom window. (He's already jumped out once before) It's loud enough to alarm us. We purchased them at a hobby shop. There are also some alarms sold at hardware stores that you can put behind doors.

Make sure your local police and rescue units are aware of your son and give them an updated picture of him every year.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, yes. You can also ask them if there is more from you that they might need. They might offer to patrol your street. Sometimes the school will offer an information card with your child's picture and their stats on it when they get school pictures taken.

I read your post and is in similar situation. We moved into an apartment from a house back in July and had the same issue with my son who is 3 yrs old on the spectrum and also named Elias as well. We have the regular door knob lock and dead bolt as well as a slide chain lock up high and also a latch lock. He also tries to run out of front door if he can which was a huge concern but we always have everything locked up. We did not ask we just installed them though. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.
