Dyslexia- Common With ASD? When To Diagnose?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have suspected for awhile that my son may have dyslexia. He is almost five and will enter kindergarten next year. I asked the school district to test him and they are coming up with all sorts of excuses why he’s too young to test, including the excuse that he is “just autistic” as if he can have only one diagnosis. Like autism, it seems like the earlier you can get supports for dyslexia, the better. They don’t want to diagnose until 2nd or 3rd grade but I feel that makes no sense as kids start… read more

I agree with the school. It is too early to start jumping the gun with a dyslexia diagnosis. A couple of mine are dyslexic. The best thing I did was wait until they were ready before trying to push reading onto them. They are working on other important skills that they need to master before reading. I have early readers and late readers. A never became a strong reader. She just learned how to use technology to her advantage to be a successful college student. For being the most dyslexic, she is also the most well read of the family, even compared to her English degree parents.

Thanks, I was just getting ready to sit down and print out a page about it and highlight it.

@A MyAutismTeam Member bring a list with you because they will try to ask you to name a reason why you think she’s dyslexic, and when you say something, they will tell you how complex dyslexia is and how it’s not just that one symptom you describe. Then they will try to convince you to wait until she’s older or they will tell you she has autism, as if that is the explanation. No one understands it but when you point it out to them, they tell you it’s too early to diagnose until it’s too late and they are woefully behind. If a kid start doing academic tasks in kindergarten, then they can be diagnosed and start getting help in kindergarten. It’s just that simple. Why deny services at an early age if it can help with success later in school? Makes no sense.

I have wondered if my daughter had dyslexia. I always just thought it was jumbeling up the letters making it hard for them to read. It is so much more. After looking at these pages I don't think she has trouble with reading, but all the rest of it is my daughter to a tee. I will be bringing that up at her IEP meeting next week. I was concerned in Kindergarten and I let them blow me off. I will not this time. I am with you. My daughter is so smart but she is falling further & further behind in school and I don't want her to get swept under the rug and forgot about. So sad we have to fight so much for our kids. I thought the school systems had the best interest of the children. Not in most cases I heard.

I would e-mail or text your concerns and ask what could help your child. Leave a paper trail. Make sure and print and keep. If your child is on an IEP or 504 I would request a meeting; to discuss your concerns. They have to comply in a timely manner. If they don't or still don't listen to your concerns i would go over their head. Especially if your child is a early reader and can already read.
I would fight for my child, mommy nows their child best.
Good Luck.
