Non Verbal Autism How Old Diagnosed With?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Boston, MA

Just wondering for those with children who are non-verbal, when were your children diagnosed as having non verbal autism? Our son is 2 1/2 yo and besides saying 'go' in the appropriate context and some echoing here and there, he has no other spontaneous language. We never lose hope, but with each passing day, the sorrow grows a little more that he may never speak. I realize the end game is that he is able to communicate with us in one form or another, but call it selfish, I would love to hear… read more

well to raise your hopes and spirits a little my son started speaking early on, very well actually then when he was 2 he couldn't pronounce words anymore and then by 2 and half he stopped talking, after lots of speech therapy he has started speaking again he started speaking last year when he was 4. He is now 5 and is doing well with sentences for the most part, he still struggles to understand the meaning of a lot of words but does well at trying to pronounce them, there are many things he says though that I am the only one who can understand what he means, every now and then he has a little bit of regression again but has been coming back to his speech much quicker. Hope this can help boost your spirits a little bit.

@br2963 my daughter only babeled and said a couple words until age 3... slowly her language exploded. PECS system helped with the visualizing of the words as they are highly visual in language. If your not doing PECS now I would start ASAP. We didn’t want her to rely on the PECS book forever. I wanted her to speak. We used PECS as a bridge until her language evolved. Now she says at least 100 words and uses 1-3 word sentences( no prompting no pecs) shebis 6. And each year says more and more. God bless you guys

Thank you for your responses. I still have faith, but sometimes it's just difficult as many parents know. I see other nonverbal children and do not think that my child is any more special than them so why will he speak and they don't. With that said, I still hold out some hope that he may speak.

It's a good thing non verbal . I used to be same thinking as this worrying like omg my boy he's so delayed in speaking . What they lacked in saying in the early days of life they made up for listening . Now my boy is genius . Goodness me I used to see it as bad now I want to go to past me and give my head a shake . Try not to worry I have every thought this is going be the case in your situation too . My boy was like 3 something before complete sentence came out . Good luck on staying stress free x
