California: Charter School / Homeschooling?
Hello Everyone,
My question is in regards to Homeschooling / Charter school options in California. I know California has strict laws about Homeschooling and having to register as a private school in your home. I've been struggling to decide what options are out there. My son is in 2nd grade and has been in public school since Pre-K. He had done fairly well, but now he is falling behind in some areas. Also, he is now experiencing things he hadn't before such as crying during recess, he won't… read more
I've been researching this as well, as far as I can tell you only need to register your home as a private school if you're going to be the one teaching all the time which you would need certifications for. You don't need to do so if you are going to use a charter school. I contacted CSSD but I haven't had a response. Only 2 days ago, and maybe they start later than the public schools? I believe you can also choose an online/homeschool program and shouldn't need to register as a private program for that either, but they might be pickier in allowing you to pick one. I have heard the school district can try to fight you on making the change but I'm considering it myself even if they want to put up a fight. They are still supposed to provide therapies if you do homeschool so that might be part of their problem. It all comes down to money. Fighting big money at the top vs your child's betterment. Good luck.
I live in california and go thru a charter school who allows me to homeschool with their curriculum or i can choose one of my own. I have a iep in place for my daughter (difficulties writing, speech, and social) so we meet with her special ed teacher and her resource teacher usually once every 3 weeks to month and have speech weekly.. for us this was best. Our daughter has never attended a regular public school. She completed kindergarten this week and is making great progress so im told. But my son goes to public school, but he is not on the spectrum. I love the time i spend with my daughter and she also gets in home aba therapy. I think finding the right school and right teachers for your child are very important. Hope that helps. Goodluck.
Thank you so much for your response. I have not heard of CAVA but will definently look into it. His Dr. has recommended to have 8-10 hours of ABA therapy : occupational, speech, and behaviorial but have yet to find a resource in my area. Im hoping school will provide but if not ill have to look elsewhere. Also, Doc recommended only individual sports ad competitive wouldnt be good for him at this time. I know homeschooling would be the best thing, but its a big leap.
Hi Redrose90, if you're able to homeschool, would be great option. I homeschooled my son, but it was easier for me, I worked out of my home. However, if you're able to do so, it would be a great option for him, just find the right one. We went through a school called CAVA(California Virtual Academy), it was great! His IEP was able to transfer over to the school, they accommodated it. We would go to a private facility for speech, he never needed OT, but probably would've went to occupational if so. My son did well, having a one on one teacher, myself, did well for him. As for social, he could join a team, soccer, baseball, etc. Good luck.
