Any Help With An Adult Child With Autism
My son recently turned 18. I have been denied his SSI, i try getting him into college he failed the entrance exam so he cant go to college, I cant find him a job. I appealed his SSI but I cant find an attorney to help me with this case. Has anyone else gone through this. I am so frustrated just had a breakdown.
Hi Joliep34 Hello, yes I have been through the college process too. My son is 18, and just did 5 classes through dual enrollment at our local community college. We first went to the Disability coordinator at the college. then the student has to meet, and agree to disability help. I was there for both meetings. Yes the placement test should just show where to begin, not to deny classes. If he got accommodations in HS, take them with you to the disability meeting and they will give him the accommodations he could use for the testing. Also we use Occupational Vocational Resources for job related things, job shadows etc...
Do you have a MH-IDD case worker to help you? Or you can get another case worker from another agency in your state and home town. also the ARC has been very helpful to steer me in the right direction. Good luck and don't give up. It will take time. things move in slow pace, but they do work.
It was a community college and they told me he can’t start college until he retakes the exam. I’m going to get in touch with the ADA department because I was just inform that a community college can not deny you because it’s a placement test.
@A MyAutismTeam Member, that doesn't sound right. My advice, try another school, but still follow up with that Community College that gave you a bad time. Let me know how it goes.
If your son was denied, it may have been due to his high function. As for schooling,it depends on what college you apply to, my son didn't have to take either one. How is his GPA, is he still in high school? Also a community college requires a placement test only, there's nothing wrong with a community college. School is school, it's also a lot cheaper too. Look into the Department of Rehabilitation for money, there may be a possibility that they will pay for his school.
You mean a low score on the SAT or ACT tests? How many colleges did he apply to? Did look into a tech school as a possibility? Does he have any work experience?
