Difference Between Preschool Severe Delay And Developmental Delay

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Phoenix, AZ

Hi MAT team, can anyone say the difference between the preschool severe delay category and developmental delay category under IEP education. In my child IEP ,they just asked me in which category do we want our child to enroll. When asked what’s the difference they said nothing more. So we just took the option of preschool severe delay. But what’s the difference exactly ?? Can anyone from MAT help me out in dis!!

Developmental delay is a way of saying we think its autism but still need more testing. My son is almost 9 and got diagnosed a year ago. So I have had developmental delay over my head since he was 2. And went three the same channels u r doing now.

You can always contact raising special kids and they can help with providing an advocate that can guide you with the IEP, your support coordinator can give you some numbers to places that can help as well. Also, ask for copies of all the assessment and evaluations. Preschool severe delay also gives you the most funding if you ever want to apply for homeschool or pay for private school. If your child is ready for kinder and has ASD having the autism category at the point will give you the most funding as well. Hope this helps :)

Hello! I just had a MET and IEP meeting. The developmental delay means performance by a preschool child on a norm-referenced test that measures atleast ONE and ONE-HALF, but not more than three, standard deviations below the mean for children of the same chronological age in TWO or more of the following areas: cognitive development, physical development, communication development, social or emotional development and adaptive development.
