Does Your Preteen/teen Child Still Like Stuffed Animals??
My soon-to-be 12 year old daughter continues to enjoy her stuffed animals - she will line them up, dress them up, and plays with them as if they were a real person (talks to them, pretends to feed & bathe them). In particular, she LOVES the autism bear we bought for her after her diagnosis and doesn’t leave home without her when we go out (not to school though). She has become very attached to this bear and has the bear do all the things she has to do (and even talks to it in a baby voice). My… read more
@A MyAutismTeam Member, to be quite honest, I steered my son away from toys or tv shows when he got to a certain age. I made suggestions and showed him what other kids his age liked. I also made social stories to explain why its better for him to play with or like things that were age appropriate. I was never evil with him though and it took time. He still loves his Star Wars but I think that's more socially acceptable than a stuff animal at age 18.
It's good for our children to be themselves, but if we want to blend them in society they need to be aware of other age appropriate options.
My son loves his stuffies as he calls them. I've noticed that on hard days or when he is really tired, he carries his stuffies. He usually has a backpack with him and I always see stuffies in there. We just went to build a bear to make bears for my grandkids. After we left the store, he asked if he could have one. It's now his favorite and he takes it everywhere and sleeps with it.
@A MyAutismTeam Member: My daughter has a LOT of stuffed animals, too! Whenever I suggest we pick her favorites and donate the others, I get met with an emphatic NO. So, we have quite the collection! Sometimes it is hard to find her in her bed at night with so many!!
My 18yr old son sleeps with both Pooh bear & pigglet & usually adds a few of his favs each night. This has lessened from his elementary school days where his Teddy went everywhere with him until High school pretty much. He still likes to add to his "collection" as he calls it & they are called "plush characters" he says because he's not a baby anymore. I believe they have helped us in many different situations like haircuts, dentist, even sleeping alone as well as lonliness (he calls them his very best friends)& showing sympathy. We had to thin his collection some over the years but didnt get away with many so I hope you have room for many because my son wont part with them very easily. I think harmless and helpful if kept within reason. 😀
Lol ..I am 36..I still like stuffed animals!😂
