Anyone Else Managing Multiple Food Allergies With Mostly Non-verbal Kiddo/s?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We're going to be exploring therapeutic preschools this year (deep breaths), and we also manage multiple food allergies. My son's allergist gave us a heads up that when we explore the schools, to ask what their allergy action plan is, where they keep EPIs, etc. And if they don't have one, that it will be more of a gut feeling--a place that does not currently have an allergy action plan but is willing to learn, is far better than one that claims they have one, but seem ignorant on basic… read more

Hi, this isn't exactly the answer you were looking for, but we are finishing up OIT with our son who was previously allergic to tree nuts, egg, and peanuts. OIT (oral immunotherapy) is a desensitization program for food allergies. It's a new-ish treatment and although many old-school allergists aren't on board with it, it has a really high success rate and is LIFE CHANGING, especially if you have concerns about your son being able to advocate for himself/his allergies. Our son was previously ana to cashews and now eats cashews every day as part of his maintenance. He will be done with the whole program in a few more months and will be able to eat all the things he was previously allergic to. We started it around the same time he was diagnosed with his ASD. He was pretty non-verbal at the time and we had no idea what the future held and if he would be able to manage his own allergies. We made the decision to jump in and do it ASAP when an opening became available at our allergist. Luckily, he has come a long was since then with his verbal skills, but we are still so glad we did OIT because now we don't ever have to worry about cross-contamination or holding him back from school or activities. If you would like more info, the website www. oit101. org is a good resource. I'm also happy to chat with you more if you have questions.

@A MyAutismTeam Member your timing is impeccible. My son had an allergic reaction after a play group just this morning/today! It most likely was cross contamination playing w shared toys. I would LOVE to hear more about OIT and how long the process took, etc. we have an appt w the allergist later this month. Last we talked to her about it she said nonverbal kiddos are tougher to qualify but would love to hear your experience!!!!!
