Loose Stool

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Ottawa, ON

My daughter, who is non-verbal, has loose stool 90% of the time. Whenever I’ve addressed it with her pediatrician, he says it’s normal for some children to have loose stool and not to worry. I’ve pushed to have her stool tested and I’m waiting on results. He said it will come back negative and that she’s fine. Has anyone else had little ones with loose stool, and if so, what has helped? Are their specific tests I should ask to be done?

I can support and agree with Hairinthewind's response. Both our sons had GI problems since birth. Loose stools, constipation, eczema, GERD, failure to thrive. We, too, went to Dr. Arthur Krigsman, in Long Island, NY for treatment. He also operates out of TX. Our children at the time were 3 and 18 months old. We had already had them on the GFCS diet, but blood, stool tests, and endoscopy/colonoscopy revealed that they both had severe GERD (refulx) and enterocolitis - Dr. Krigsman calls it "autistic enterocoloitis" because it is a gut inflammation that is very common in children on the spectrum. Our children were placed on medications and also did the methyl B-12 shots which helped the body heal. My older son still has problems today. Since Dr. Krigsman doesn't accept insurance, and he is out of network, we could only afford to use him so long. Realize that the loose stools are not normal. If your child has it for an extended period of time, it may also lead to malnourishment because the gut is not absorbing nutrients. You need to heal the gut - and when that happens, you'll also see improvement in the brain and in behavior.

I'm going to look for some articles for you to read that may help. How old is your daughter?

Thank you for the resources. It can be overwhelming trying to find credible ones on your own. I have a very picky eater, but I’m going to try and ease her into it. I’m learning how to be sneaky by putting veggies into her mini muffins ;)

Toronto isn’t too far to go. I’ll show my hubby the info. It’s definately an option if we can’t get the help here. Thank you :)

She is 3 years old. We are in Canada near Ottawa. We are looking for another doctor as he said he didn’t see the need for any tests at our last appointment. I’m currently looking for a specialist. Any help/advise is much appreciated :) I am so grateful to have found this site!
