Has Anybody Had A Child Diagnosed With Autism, And Then Not?
Back in March, my son was diagnosed with autism. He was 2y4m old at the time. We've been getting all sorts of help (behavioral tech, educator, speech, occupational), and in June he started going to daycare two days a week. Since July, his speech has blossomed, and he's made improvements in several other areas as well. Last month, he went in for evaluations in preparation for preschool. This is an old trick. None of the school professionals may have the qualifications to diagnose autism, and it is not their job to give you their opinion on whether he has it or not. School psychologist may not have equivalent credentials as the one who diagnosed your son. Our diagnosis came from a psychologist with experience with ASD diagnosis. I suspect their motive is to lessen the amount of services they give your child. In CA, you can challenge it with professional diagnosis. I don't know about where you live, but find it hard to believe they know more than an expert that you have taken him too.
Thank you everybody! I think we will get a third screening soon. We still get state aide since it was a state agency that tested him first, and that is reevaluated every three years. The school says they will reevaluate him next year to make sure they didn't miss anything. In the meantime, I'll have his OT and speech therapist give recommendations to the school and see how things go. I guess I was just thrown, that in 5 months, he's made enough progress that four professionals said developmental delay instead of autism.
I was told that there are different qualifications for the educational environment vs outside of education. I had 2 evaluations w/ autism diagnosis. This includes one from Marcus Autism Center ( Emory). My school still will not put autism on his IEP. They also put developmental delay. I’m sure there is something they’re not telling me. My son DEFINATELY has full fledged autism.
