Potty Training

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My son is 5.....he has HFA, ADHD combo, SPD, and Pica.....he will use the potty at school but fights at home.....he doesn't mind sitting in soiled or wet pull ups or underwear.....he will go potty if he is changing and has to go.....so now my questions......

How long will this last?
Why doesn't it bother him to be in soiled or wet pull ups or underwear?
Why don't rewards work?
Am I alone in this?

I'm tired of smelling my child in public

We are currently training my 5 year old and I totally feel your pain. He is the same way, wet diapers or underwear doesn't bother him. I feel school did more damage then help in my case. He is traumatized when he sees a wipe so I have to wash him with soap every time. ABA therapy First taught him what we do when we are in the bathroom. We would go every 30 minutes to sit, remove clothes then wash and dry our hands. Now that he got it down, we are moving on to the next phase...being at home with no pull up, we play under a plastic mat for easy clean in case of accidents and we go potty as often as 15 minutes. Every time he goes pee , he gets a reward (sugar free candy). The last 2 days, he's been initiating to go .. believe me is the best feeling in the world to hear him say mommy potty or to see him go without saying anything and he actually pees. We are not all the way there yet but hopefully this method of breaking it down will make it easier for him to get it and stick with it. Best of luck to you and your little Angel!!!

I currently went through the same issue. Blaze is 5 1/2 and had no care for potty training. We went to an 80 hr. ABA program at the Child Study Center in Fort Worth. Great place great people great service. We did the water log and dry check every 5 mins. A DRO was in place (earning puzzle pieces 6). Every 10 mins on potty no matter what. We did this 16 hours and it eventually worked. Make a party out of po trying and ignore problem behavior. He knows what you want him to do I promise. Hope this helps some maybe just a different technique to try. Much love

My 5 yr old daughter loves My Little Pony (understatement). She has a chromosome duplication that causes all kinds of havoc including autistic behaviours. She will potty on toilet prompted but will not initiate. Is fine with a full diaper. I made a "Potty Pony" picture on which she gets to place a MLP sticker each time she uses the toilet. If she's wearing her MLP unders she will pee right through them and become very upset. We also have issues with "Code Brown" behavior - playing with her BM. So now there is a "PooPoo Prize" awaiting her when she does that on toilet. I'm an older single mom and she's my 5th to potty train. I'm of the "no pressure, no trauma" approach and I am beginning to wonder if she will be like a few of the other kids with this duplication that I've read about - still using adult sized diapers in her teens!
Discouraged but Trying. Best to all in same boat. 🀘🏼
