Can Our Child Go Into Mainstream Education?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've read some posts about parents fighting to get their kid into a special ed class but I wonder if our 7 year-old daughter can get out of special ed classes some or all of the time. We will move into a another school district in a few months hopefully so I'd like the option to turn over a new leaf. I understand the school may fear she will disrupt the class or will bring down school testing average a little. The other downside may be that she won't be able to handle it but maybe she can but… read more

All three of mine are on the spectrum and graduated with diplomas. I would say yes fight them even if it means getting an advocate and a one on one aid to help with transition from class to class and during class Make sure you make things specific so that your child can be successful

I am all for mainstreaming if you can but I always tell others be very cautious about this kind of thing. If you really think your child is better mainstreamed then pysh for it but also realize getting back out if it doesn't work is not always easy. They are Likely to fight you more going back into special ed so just be careful. The theory of being around NT children will be better is not always correct.

Sometimes mainstream is not for our kids. But you will never know unless the child tries. I had a friend whose child was in some mainstream classes but the harder the classes got the more he shut down. In the end he was placed in all special ed classes. Which ended up being a good fit and what was best for him.

I don't really see the benefit of going into mainstream. If my son is happy and is learning well in special education and making some friends there, why put all the extra stress on him and the teacher that isn't as equipped to help him? I'm a little biased though and just terrified of bullying. I'm currently looking into specialized schools. Spendy, but I just don't see public school as being as good of an option.
