I need to get back into the workforce, does anyone have any advice for careers that are good for special needs parents?

Have you ever considered working from home? I'm a medical coder. I currently work full-time at a facility which is difficult because my mom is stuck taking care of my daughter for the most part, but I am trying to work my up to become a coder that only codes from home. Good Luck !!!

depending on the Department of Education for the state you live in, you might be able to Substitute teach or become a paraprofessional within a school district.

I am the one that works in my family but my wife has tried to work part time and has found it difficult. The issue as you know is that there are often so many appointments that it is tough to even keep a part time job because of all the missed time.

My wife was doing transcription for an insurance company for a while because it can be done at home. You can also do medical transcription but you need coding experience most times for that. If you were looking to get into the special needs field I can tell you I have attempted that and was offered positions but the pay was to low for me to accept the positions. Since I am the only one that works I could not take a pay cut.

I have heard of some people actually working in the schools as assistants or office jobs so they have the same schedule as the children as well. I would just be honest with any employer and explain your situation so they know. Some of them are better than others with being flexible.

These are all great suggestions. I mull over how to make it work myself. I’m solely responsible for my son, do it all alone besides from help from his wonderful therapists and teachers. I don’t have the family support to lean on so it feels impossible to meet the high expectations of a lot of jobs. Just keep pushing, I keep shaking the trees till I find my unicorn solution 😭😂.

I recently applied for an ABA job since it would be flexible additionally I was pursuing a career change into teaching prior to my daughter being diagnosed but was undecided on what grades to teach, once she was diagnosed I decided to pursue a masters in special education birth through 5 since I am a firm believer of early intervention. They also have an add on program to be a BCBA so once I am near completion I am pursuing that also. I just started school but we can use extra income so I am looking for employment, but it's just so difficult to find something flexible enough so my daughter doesn't miss therapy.
