Toilet Trained

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

At what age was your child potty trained? My son will be 5 in July and still is not. He always pees on the potty but hardly ever poops in it. He only pees when I ask him to not on his own. I feel just so down about this. I just don't know what to do. Is anyone in the same bout or has been here and can give me hope ?

My kids are four and we have been potty training for a while. I'm excited to hear that you are as far as you are. I thought it was going to take much longer. And it might for me and my kids but that's ok. Sounds like you are a great mom who is doing an amazing job with your little guy. He will get there. Is he in OT? They might have a better idea on to help to go on his own.

Don't give up, five is not bad, that's about how old mine was and it would've probably been sooner, but I was working and he spent a lot of time in preschool and daycare and everyone doesn't work hard to train your kid. I knew mine was using the potty at home so I talked to him, and told him clearly just like a regular kid "if you don't go to the bathroom like a big boy, you can't go outside! " and I also told him no one at school can stop you from going to the bathroom. Get up and walk out. And that's exactly what he did! The teachers were stunned, tried to blame it on him being non verbal, but that was b.s. they were lazy. You can teach these kids ANYTHING, there just need to be a routine, that's what they really respond to. Good Luck.!

my son was potty trained around the age of 2 and we had the poo completely together by age three. he is now eight and the only issue I have with him bathroom wise is flushing because the noise is so loud to him. your doing a good job with your lil one keep at it and keep doing the best that you can, that's all any of us can do good luck :-)

My son is 4. He is not yet potty trained but we're getting there. He is starting to show more and more interest in it which is a giant leap from being scared to go in the bathroom at all. I was never to concerned about it because I know like everything else he will get there in his own sweet time :) I was watching Ron White one evening and he said his friends have a 12 year old with autism and every time he went potty they had a parade...I laughed and laughed because I know the feeling of excitement when my son accomplishes something, it is border line parade level lol. I try not to get myself down over things he can't do because I know I do everything in my power to help him. We give him tons of love and support which some children are not that lucky. As long as you're doing your best to help your child that's all you can do. Keep up the good work momma :)

My daughter is 4 & 1/2 and we at the same stage. She will pee on the potty, but not poop. Just know that it WILL come together eventually.
