Does Anyone Have A Solution For Dry, Itchy Skin?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Downers Grove, IL

Our son has dry itchy skin all over, but mostly on his legs. We hope that he is not eating gluten off the floor at school. It cleared up for a while and came back. We used a prescription for yeast but are not sure if it relates.

Members offered extensive advice for managing a child's dry, itchy skin, with many sharing personal experiences treating severe eczema in their own children. Several members recommended switching to fragrance-free and dye-free detergents and soaps, using thick moisturizers like Vaseline or coconut oil multiple times daily, trying bleach baths twice weekly, and supplementing with omega-3 fish oils or cod liver oil to support skin health from the inside. A recurring theme was the importance of tracking potential triggers in food and environment, consulting a dermatologist to rule out conditions like plaque psoriasis, and recognizing that stress can worsen skin flare-ups in children already facing developmental challenges.

If it's mainly in the legs it may be plaque psoriasis, best to get a referral to a dermatologist as that's the only way to know for sure what's wrong

Don't use Vaseline. With repeated use it causes the body to stop producing it's own natural oils in the area you are using it on and dries your skin.
Use either coconut oil or a pure Vit. E oil which works even better when you combine either one with a coconut butter or shea butter cream . That combo stops itching and heals the skin. Coconut oil, by itself, also does that. Allergies are usually the culprit, but stress is an even bigger factor and these kids are under a tremendous amount of stress. There is also a supplement called Herpanacine which works from the inside out and I have friends that tell me it works.

Bathing with soap can cause that. My son's doctor recommended we use Dove, lukewarm water oatmeal. It helped tremendously.
