What Age Did Your Child Start Talking? Did They Say Any Words?
My daughter is 3 she was diagnosed in March. She does not talk yet. She does day her ABC's point out letters. She also count's to 20 and sings. She has sensory problems. Loud noises ate what bothers her the most. Lately she plugs her ears with her fingers if she thinks anything is going to be loud. I was wanting to know if she sounds similar to anyone else's child. What worked to help in education. I am looking into preschools right now. They have a aba school but I'm hesitant about aba. What… read more
Every child is different. So don't waste energy on comparing your child with others. Instead look for effective treatment and this site can help a lot with that.
If ABA is being offered, then by all means, jump on it. Be part of the group that defines the goals. You should ask that your child learns imitation skills, receptive language and expressive language. Start reading so you can know what you are talking about. Get the book "A work in Progress" by Leaf and McEachin. After you have more knowledge, you will be able to better assess whether your child's ABA program is effective and well-run.
You can also look for a speech therapist that has experience working with nonverbal autistic children.
RDI is a good option for you to implement in your home as it will give you skills to better guide and direct your child.
I think ABA is good for autistic children as it helps them cope and also helps with behavior. With that being said how a child does with ABA is often based on the therapist. Some therapists are better than others do I always advise that if it does not work out at first give it time and also try another therapist before giving up on ABA.
I would go with an ABA based preschool over a standard one any day of the week because the staff U.S. Generally better trained and able to give ASD children more of what they need.
When it comes to autism the earlier you get therapy the better the result. I have a son who did not speak until he was almost 4 and a daughter who is still nonverbal at 9, and ABA has helped them both.
She was getting therapy at home until she turned 3. Now she will go to pte k next month. The school she will go to is for autistic children. There she will receive all the therapy she needs including Aba. I am terrified to send her mainly because she is nonverbal. If she gets hurt or doesn't like it she can't just tell me. I can also put her in a few other schools where she would be with special needs and not special needs kids but I think she will benefit more with the Aba school.
My twins didn't start babbling until they were 4 years old. We then got music therapy and they started singing words. It was wonderful! They didn't really start sentences until about 6 years old and it was like - me want cookie -or- me want truck.....speech therapy has helped alot.
At 3 in the US she can go to a public pre-school program for free. Most if not all school districts have pre-school programs. My son, Asperger, was in such pre-school programs for 3 to 5 in classes with half neurotypical childen/half Aspies or high functioning autistic kids doing parallel play and learning. These were the best programs ever! Speak to your school district. As for the noise sensitivities, being myself an Aspie mom with extreme noise hypersensivities, I would recommend you look into neurofeedback, it's supposed to help young kids with that (but not adults), that's something I want to look into for my son (it's supposed to help "retrain the brain". As for ABA we did ABA with my son for a few months: cute but did not help anything. My son said his first good sentence at 30 months old but his vocabulary really exploded at 4 years 4 months old (he is also raised with 2 languages).
