Financial Aid In Georgia

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Savannah, GA

If anyone lives in GA, I would appreciate your help. My daughter and son-in-law work all the time except when they have to take off work when their medically fragile son is sick – my grandson
I had hoped to complete all of the necessary paperwork to begin the process of getting financial aid for my daughter's family but was told by the Social Security office that a custodial parent must go to their office to initiate the process
My grandson is getting no financial support but he’s had a heart… read more

All your daughter has to do is call the social security office and request paperwork. I did that then had a phone interview then three months later my daughter was receiving social security. I never had to step foot in a office.

With Social Security (my daughter receives disability) a custodial parent has to become the 'payee' for the receiver to get their check. The child is Disabled and should be receiving benefits as such. Keep at this, as Social Security can often dismisses claims such as these.

You should look into Ava's Law that will go into effect in JAN 2016 but it only applies until a child reaches age 7. http://onlineathens.com/general-assembly/2015-0...

The age limitation is moronic to say the least and expect there to be long wait lists as a flood of people try to get help with few people trained because there simply wasn't large pool of people able to afford various therapies.

I'm not from Georgia but some of the financial help I think is federal so should apply statewide. Either way there should be funds available through various programs, ie: CHILDREN'S hospital? Regional Center? I'm on the West coast and they have finds available through North Coast Regional Center, also social security, there is programs available to provide care for your child also if the parent isn't able to work due to having to care for the child there's programs that can pay the family member to care for the child. Have you looked for a Childs advocate? I hope this helps, I'm learning as we go, I will keep you all in my prayers, if that's ok.
