Toilet Training
Anyone have any idea that will help us out. Ethan is non verbal. Signing and communication cards we just started weeks ago. Can't seem to get him to use the potty. He will just sit but nothing. We keep working with him but him being non verbal makes it a little hard. Still stuck in diapers.
I have a potty step stool. www.squattypotty.com I SWEAR by it.

Also I used gummie bears as a reward. Will he pee standing up? there is a cute little urinal that is for potty training and its only like $15 . attaches to toilet. My boys want to stand and pee like Daddy!!! so that is great!!! We pee / poop with door wide open. I made up a song I would sing EVERYTIME i used bathroom. Something fun and silly and upbeat!! And when he would try I would sing it ! and cheer and say positive things. All kids are different. My son hated being forced to "try" every 20 min. Once we stopped forcing him to try he started going on his own..... Now of course he was 3.5 when he became pee trained, and is now poop trained at 4 and night time he stays dry and wears undies for only a month now. It is slow and steady, and there will be accidents...lol but thus is life!!!!! Good luck feel free to ask me any questions about it all.
Hello @A MyAutismTeam Member,
Thank you for sharing your questions! Toilet training is often a challenge for our youngsters. Would you be interested in more resources on toilet training? Please see this excellent free resource from Autism Speaks, their toolkit on toilet training. https://www.autismspeaks.org/science/resources-...
You also mentioned that you would like to increase his verbal abilities. It's great that you are working with signs and communication cards. They are an excellent way to start. It can also be very helpful to work on the "idea" of communication and interaction: you do/say something, then I say/do something, then you say/do something.
Are you interested in additional ways to increase his vocalizations and interaction? There is a great way to do that, and that is to use an acoustical support. This method is known as TAGteach (Teaching with Acoustical Guidance). It is an ABA-based method that delivers very precise positive reinforcement to a child. It is also easy to do and is extremely low cost. Please see this article http://autismchaostocalm.com/got-autism-want-to....
Best wishes to you, your family, and that cute little Ethan.

In all i know all children learn differently. This one has just been the hardest.
@A MyAutismTeam Member Ethan is 3 but also he is a non verbal child. He cant tell you what he wants or needs. Example when he wants milk he will open the refrigerator and get it out and bring it to you. This is how he communicates. We are trying a few new approaches verses my past children were so much easier. At 2 they were fully successful with potty training. My daughter was so much easier than all of them trained in 2 hours no accidents ever.
Ethan we have to take in account that there are alot of barriers in his way.
