Autistic And Adhd Laugh When Other Hurts
Hi
I have 6 years old daughter and 4 years old son. My daughter is autistic and has ADHD. In general she is high functioning. Everything looks OK except her focus and social issues. When her brother hurts (i.e. fall down), she laughs. This mad me really angry from her. She does same thing with friends which made other girls think she is mean to them. I keep telling her to be nice to her brother and her friends so they are nice to her but it will do it again. For some reason she thinks… read more
My 8 year old will smirk when I yell. I actually stopped yelling because of the reaction. I haven't read your story yet, sorry. Are you all using ABA? Have you tried social stories?
And you are not focusing on the negative, you're trying to figure this all out. It's a very interesting ball game that we all play. The rules constantly change, and what works one time won't necessarily work the next time. They're shape shifters, I tell you.
I agree with @A MyAutismTeam Member, you might need to observe a bit more to figure it out. It might be beneficial to try active ignoring to see if you can lessen the occurrence. All of you will have to do it together. Just don't even react to it.
Thanks everyone and thanks CHristine. This actually makes sense. I am sure she does not understand many things I say. I will try your advise and let you know. My daughter goes to social group to help her with this issue.
Thanks
My son smiles and laughs when he hurts someone else. I tell him it's not nice and it's definitely not funny. but, he still does it. He's 2. I know it's frustrating. but hopefully with keeping up on the discipline for his actions, usually a tap on the hand and a time out, he'll learn it's really not ok.
My 5 year-old daughter does the same thing and she's never been called an HFA. Some kids (some adults, too)lack empathy. They laugh when they see people fall down. Slapstick comedy and older cartoons were full of this type of humor. Wait she fall downs down and people are laughing at her. It isn't quite as funny when we hurt ourselves.
Thank you so much for your advise. The issue is that I think she understands the facial expression. She can tell if someone is sad or happy or angry. She intend to bother her brother sometimes and enjoys that! That where I am not sure if she just has a bad behavior and selfish character?
