What Affordable Harness Or Stroller Has Worked For You Guys With A Bigger Child That Runs Away Every Chance He Gets?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Steele, AL

Landon is 4 and he is a big guy. Over 3 ft tall and around 55 pounds. He is still nonverbal and runs away from me every chance he gets. Is there anything that has helped keep your child with you while shopping, walking outside, etc? We are getting ready for vacation and it is so stressful trying to keep him with us since he has outgrown traditional strollers. I looked up some of the special needs strollers but they are sooooooooo expensive. Also I tried a backpack harness with him around age 3… read more

If you are looking for a full size stroller you will not find one in a store and they are also expensive. You would need insurance to pay and they will if it is done right.

You need your doctor to refer you to a PT or OT for a mobility evaluation. You also need to do this through a mobility company. Check out Convaid they have great products. Snug seat and Otto Bock also make them but con aids are very sturdy and reliable.

This might not work in time for your vacation, but over correction/positive practice helped us a lot. When our son elopes we tell him that we do not run. We stay with family. We hold his hand and walk back to starting point to practice. Now he understands that we are going back to practice. He is now 5. He actually talks to and reminds himself while waiting for us to check out groceries. He says "have to stay with family" It helps us to involve him in everything, like putting groceries in the cart etc. We still struggle with this, but not quite as much as we did. We still occasionally used a stroller at 4. I think the brand was The First years. A black umbrella stroller with a taller handle. Around $50. A new therapist blocked our son and asked him what he wanted. We are trying to encourage him to communicate instead of eloping. He is emerging verbal but struggles to always get it out. There must be a way to do this with gestures or communication system

I keep my five-year-old on a child leash when on walks or he would run away. I got a second hand double stroller he fits in. Look at yard sales for large strollers. Either way, it's something he'll have to get used to. Spectrum kids don't like change. Maybe ease him into the idea of wearing a leash. Put it on for a few minutes each day and let him have a special treat while he wears it. Increase how long he wears it until he's used to it. Only take him to his favorite place if he'll wear it.

the mcclaren stroller may be cheaper than others but has turned out great for my son. its true that some strollers the child will outgrow but for my son its a perfect fit. but if you feel your child will need the stroller for a long time do your research. the stroller I have goes up to 150lbs and the foot rest can be changed when my son grows. this stroller can also fold up like an umbrella stroller which is great for storage. also this stroller looks like a stroller and not a wheel chair which I didnt want my son to have.

Be very careful about the cheap ones because as the child grows they will exceed the weight limit quickly and they are also not very sturdy. It is best to do it right from the start. Contact your local mobility company or DME they can help. It is a process and takes a few months but it is well worth it. I manage a branch for a national mobility company and I do this every day, I also have one for my daughter. I have seen the mistakes of people looking for the quick and easy solution and they are hardly ever happy with the outcome.
