Preschool With ABA
Has anyone here tried a "typical" preschool with a 1:1 ABA facilitator for their child with autism?
I am never a big fan of putting an ASD child in a regular daycare or classroom unless they are high functioning and they show signs they can handle it. Every child is different but I just feel that ASD children require more than they get when they are completely mainstreamed. The other thing is that the teachers are not trained as well in a standard class. Bringing the ABA in is good if they allow it but most times the schools do not like the disruption of someone from the outside coming in that is not bound by their curriculum.
Each child is different, and each ABA professional is different. If the professional is respectful of the child, their sensory issues, thier individuality, their body, etc., and the child enjoys the time together, great. BUT, please read this link and be aware of warning signs and what a good and NOT-good ABA practitioner is so you can make the best decisions for your child: www.autistikids.com/aba.html
We had our 1:1 ABA therapists go to our son's mainstream preschool during the summer, so they could do more social rather than 1:1. Some preschools are very picky about other teachers/therapists attending though.
I had my son in regular daycare. They said he needed more one on one help so was put in IEP classes. It's helping him. Also speech and Occupational Therapy. He 3 years old.
She was in a regular pre-school for about 2 years before transitioning into a autism-based pre-school class at a regular elementary school.
