Teaching Multiplication Tables
Hello all,
What has worked best for you to teach a non verbal kid with severe autism multiplication tables? For somebody who is unable to respond to cues or demonstrate their learning.
Thanks!
Thanks!
AS the previous poster has stated, manipulatives are very helpful. My daughter is austistic-nonverbal but is able to manipulate objects and images to express numbers, money, and time. She will be 15 in January. So, I would agree to the hands-on approach and include some real-world experience for your child as well, such as 25 cents x 4 = $1. :-)

I would use blocks or anything hands on. Take a look at Cuiseniare rods. Also, the hands on blocks in Montessori is a good thing to investigate. I used to teach Montessori and I highly recommend the hands on approach to non-verbal children. Can your child copy what you do. Also can he/she take turns. These two things are the basics for learning. If you are interested I can tell you more on how to teach this to a non-verbal child. I know how. I did this with my grandson when he was little and with my patients before I retired from pediatric nursing.
Is it absolutely necessary a non-verbal kiddo to learn the multiplication table? What other math skills does the child possess? What is the goal? Can s/he use a calculator?
We haven't had to teach this yet but I think a good approach would be a visual Ipad game (or Android tablet) - there are dozens of multiplications apps (many with positive reviews) and often need to try a few apps to see which one would work best for a child as each child/app is different. Good luck.
