Feeding Issues, Lack Of Interest In Food
My 2 year old has been in therapy since just about a year old. I know early intervention is key, but we have not seen much improvement in terms of eating. He is delayed speech and in OT as well as feeding therapy. He has NO interest in food. Any suggestions? My son also does not have much interest in toys. How do you build a kids interest? Nothing has worked. Thanks . Hope someone else has been through this.
Feeding is a tough one - feeding therapy was only marginally helpful for us (did try one new thing to the diet which is helpful) - it was basically play therapy using food. Given picky eater, we supplement with B-vitamins and fats including choloesterol, phospholipids and omega-3s. MB12 shots were a wow for us as well.
From a therapy perspective, I would build around the kids interest and expand from there. For example, when our son was 2 yrs old he was obsessed with helicopters and we could use that to see a lot of new words and concepts and introduce new topics. I would look into play therapy as that is something that any parent can do (Floortime, Son Rise, RDI, are different versions of it). Good luck.
my son will be 5 years old in november 2014 and has been in therapy since 2 , he just showed progress in his speech this year after we started with the methyl b12 shots.
Sometimes it is texture. My one autistic son is very picky about food. It can't touch. Vegetables are not acceptable. The other ways everything but won't use a spoon/utensil. He likes sharp tastes. Try variety. Only one thing at a time. Don't push it. My one soon not interested in toys in a traditional way either. Try puts and pans. Try light up things. Music. Think outside the box.
Have u checked to see if any of his meds suppresses appetite? My son was that way when he was on Topamax. He is off that med. Right now, he eats really well but just some certain kinds of food. He will not touch any fruits or vegetables in their natural form. I started blending them and mixing them into his oatmeal. So we have different shades of oatmeal all the time. Wishing u the best of luck and hope things get better.
There is no easy solution to this, it just takes time. You have to slowly introduce new things and just give it time. We had to use taste free liquid vitamins and mix it in with our daughters drinks to get nutrients in. She still does not eat a wide variety of foods at eight but it has gotten better.
Eventually you will find something that will motivate your child but he is still really young so it might take a lot of trial and error. Once you find the motivator you can use it to get him to do and try other things.
