2 Years Old, Sleepless Nights

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Copley, OH

My 2 year old boy has ASD and still doesn't sleep through the night. He wakes up about every two or so hours wanting something to drink. Sometimes he goes back to sleep and other times he gets really upset and cries for a whole. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you ahead of time

My son was like that when he was that age. He chewed the nipples off his bottle and his pacifier. We had to go cold turkey and take away his bottles and pacifiers. He would cry and throw a fit but I needed to be firm. Sippy cup only. He would throw the cup but eventually realized he wasn't getting a bottle anymore. I also had a STRICT bedtime routine. Bath, story/cartoon with the lights dimmed way down. By the time we put him to bed the house was silent. All of my kids went to bed at the same time with the same routine. Also, when we would go into check on him if he cried minimal talking. I know it sounds mean but besides him needing a good nights sleep my husband and I did too. I had 4 kids under 5yrs old and I needed sleep. Jonathan's 17yrs old now and still doesn't sleep more than 6 hours a night but he has learned that bedtime is bedtime. He may not fall asleep right away but he stays in his room unless he needs to go to the bathroom or get his cup of water.

@A MyAutismTeam Member I would do that but my boyfriends and I are big and have a pretty small bed so there isn't really anywhere for him to sleep. Thank you for your feedback though! 😀

The wanting a drink may be compulsive or habitual behavior, but I would bring it up at the next doctor appt just to rule out any medical cause.

We bought a cup holder that you attach to a stroller normally (found at any toys r us store here in Canada) and attached it to his headboard. It took only a week or so for him to realise that he could help himself to a drink at any time in the night, but the only catch was it had to be a spill proof cup obviously. We got more than a few hours sleep and he went back to sleep on his own after helping himself to a drink.
