How To Know Your Child Is Making Progress By ABA

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son started ABA three months ago and I am tryingto evaluate any progress. I do see some great eye contact changes and not running away changes. But not sure it is due to his aging or due to ABA. So what should one see when the ABA is in progress?

How can I see ABA is benifiting?

I think looking for a change in attitude within the first months is important. Liam seems so much happier with ABA.

It may take some time to notice the benefits of whatever type of therapy. Rome was not built in a day. For me sometimes I think my kids are not getting anything. And then I notice our fish are still alive or my youngest has not put a hole in the wall for 3 weeks (last year it was about 3 times a week). I would suggest keeping a notebook of behaviors so you can look back and actually see the progress on paper if you are looking for tangible evidence it is helping. It can get frustrating. Hang in there!

As your provider what areas they're taking data on. It should give you a better idea of what in particular they're focusing on right now. Expect the behaviors they're targeting to be small changes that they will build on over time. Nothing happens quickly because the whole concept is that small changes add up.
That should help you get a better handle in what you should be looking for.

Any kind of therapy takes a while to start working but with ABA you should notice a change in behavior. I do not know if three months is a long enough time that even if I were not seeing improvement that it would give up on it. The other thing is that it is different for every child, none of them progress on the same exact timetable.
