Choice Of Kindergarten
I'm confused as to which kindergarten they should place my son. They are insisting on the self contained class as he has attention issues and his receptive language is not up to par.I want him in the integrated class with an aide, but they say the demands will still be overwhelming for him. Any advise??
I would start with the segregated class first because your child is going to get more help and attention that way and see how it goes. If she does well you can have her partial mainstream and then see how that goes. Everyone wants their child mainstreamed as soon as possible but it is often not the best idea because the mainstream teachers are not going to give your child the extra help they need I guarantee it, the Schiller will push for it to so they do not have to cover the extra services your child may need.
My son is in both classes right now, he starts in the mainstream class and then goes to the special ED class as he needs to. If he is having a bad day he will stay in special all day. Our school is very good with this but not all of them are
Is there a possibility of partial mainstreaming? My DD is going to be in a SDC class for K (and I agree that's the appropriate placement for her currently) with the goal the following year to spend her time split between the SDC 1st grade and a general ed K class. She does better with typical peers who are younger.
I want my kid in both kinds of Pre-K classes so I'll be able to make some comparisons. Personally, I'm going to push my daughter now because she can always slide back into special ed if necessary. She's already in a special ed class and regular class but the I think the regular class teachers just ignore her because she's does what she wants to do.
@evak @MyAutismTeam users... Thanks for your help.I appreciate it a lot. Im going to let him stay at the self-contained class for now and see how it goes.
We opted for a segregated classroom for kindergarten and then the following year he repeated kindergarten in a regular classroom. The demands were way to high and has spent most of his schooling in a segregated classroom which was the best fit for him.
