Not Wanting To Go To School
My son was diagnosed at 5 with HFASD. He hasn't really started to have any problems until February of this year when he turned 11. He never was a huge fan of school but he went and this year he had an amazing teacher who worked hard to get him to enjoy being in the class room. This teacher was making great strides with my son, he even had my son saying he was looking forward to going to school and asking for extra work. Unfortunately the teacher left to take a full time position at another… read more
Hi LesleyA67,
This is a tough one - no fun. It seems to always come down to the teacher - especially with our kids with autism. They don't like change and it's especially difficult when our kids come to really like and trust a certain provider, and then they leave. That happened to us several times over the years with our son and it was always a chore to get him accustomed to the new staff. It seemed to help when we could get the new people to really take an interest in our son personally. If there is a way to REALLY stimulate him and reward him with things or activities he likes to do, at school, and make those rewards frequent - even if he just puts his foot onto school grounds or inside the classroom - he gets that certain reward. Try link that reward to the new teacher - let them provide it. Overtime it might get him less and less opposed to getting up and going to school. Good luck!
Thank you so much for the suggestions. I have made some head way with my son. He did have a few meetings with the teacher which seemed to help a lot and he was going back to school regularly for 2 weeks, unfortunately there was a long weekend and then we were back to square one. I don't know that he really has bonded to anyone else in the school. The school has a limited budget and he can have an EA but she has other students to contend with as well as my son. So every day we have the morning battle he gets so upset and I am upset as well and we aren't seeing any progress. I am wondering if a service dog would help him but I was informed the dog would not be allowed in the school in our region so I see another battle on my hands and in the near future if we decide to get a service dog for him. School is almost out for the summer now and we will still try to get him there even if it's for a half day or some sort of modified schedule. It is very frustrating but I thank you got your time and suggestions.
