Non Verbal Runner Who Just Recently Learned How To Open Door

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is a non verbal runner who opens doors and climbs baby gate, but he has a sister who comes and goes so I can't deadbolt the door, my manager is telling me to put him on a leash in our home which sounds sad in public it's necessary but at home? I'm so lost as to what to do

I don't think a leash it cage is a good idea. They have services out there who can provide a security system for you guys! If I were you, I'd just deadbolt that door.

My 11 year old grandson is a runner. We had window limiters installed on the windows so that he cannot get out the windows. We put inexpensive battery operated door alarms on the doors. It doesn't keep him from escaping, but it lets my daughter know that he's opened the door. I don't know how old your daughter is, but there are keyless deadbolts that are operated by a key pad. In public, we have hands on him all the time. I,t's getting more difficult as he is nearly as tall as me.

I had this problem when my son was around 4. We had just moved to a new house with a wraparound front porch that led to the back gate. My son got out of the house and went out the front door and past my daughter and her friend without anyone knowing. It took about thirty minutes for us to find him. I changed my front and back door locks to key locks. The only way in oor out was with a key. This Meant that I always had to have the key on me at all times but the peace of mind it gave me was worth it
