Any Other Parents Try Vyvanse With Their Child That Has Autism And ADD/ADHD?
My 7 yr old son has autism and we have noticed an increase in issues with attentiveness and focus in school and at home. He has always had problems with this however I feel we have made excuses until now due to him being so young. Now that his responsibilities at home and school are increasing it is becoming a problem. It could take anywhere from 10-20 minutes for him to get dressed or use the bathroom unless you are right there reminding him what he is supposed to be doing. He has the⦠read more
You know I had the same concern with meds. And really I still have it but I had to try to make peace with the fact that he may need these meds his whole life.
Also to keep in mind, studies indicate that properly treating ADHD reduces a child's risk of substance abuse later in life by 50%.
We use Qullivant XR, which is liquid extended release
Ritalin. I have a few thoughts for you. First, it can take a few weeks for a child to adjust to the medication and often side effects decrease or go away completely in a month or so. We had trouble with falling asleep too but a small dose of melatonin helps and it's not nearly as bad now as it was when he started.
30 mg appears to be the recommended starting dose for this medication but it also comes in 20 mg capsules. You might discuss starting at 20 and titrating up to 30 if you feel like its necessary after a week or two. Also you should never break open a capsule and guess at how much medication your child is getting. I'm really surprised that your doc would even suggest that.
I really like using Quillivant because with the fact that it's a liquid, dosing can be started very small and you can titrate in small amounts until you really dial in the exact right amount.
It's a very personal decision to put your child on medication but my son wouldn't be in a mainstream class without it. No one knows what agony that decision is until they have to make it so don't listen to all the "opinions" that friends and family so helpfully try to put forward. They don't know squat.
My son has been taking 20 mg vyvanse for almost 4 weeks now. He has been sleeping and eating fine , but his Tics are MUCH more prominent and he even developed a few more. We are going to try something else soon, but after reading it seems that the medications affect each child differently.
I was VERY resistant and against giving him meds, but after seeing him struggling in school and his work and home... It was time. Even in the last few weeks, I have seen improvements in his class and homework. It was a good choice for us to begin meds. Now we just have to figure out which med works best for him. Thank you for sharing.
There are so many meds out there. We fought the meds as well when he was 5. Now he is 10 and we have been through many different meds. We did try vyvanse for about 3 weeks. He did not sleep well on it, even with the Melatonin. You have to give it a couple of weeks to see if it works. If he has tics of any kind call the doc. The point is different meds work for different kids. You just have to find the right one for now. Some work for a while and then stop. I will say that it is the best decision we ever made, to put him on meds. He does much better in school with them.
Side effects dry mouth David my son can't sleep after taking it but then they put him on sleeping medication called Trazodone which it help him sleep though the night
