Internalizing Anxiety That Leads To An Emotional Breakdown/meltdown
My 4yr old son internalized his feelings. He stops talking, making eye contact, and loses control. It builds up in him for weeks until he explodes on little requests like brushing his teeth or eating dinner. He'll go to his room rip apart his bed, throw his books and toys everywhere, turn off his light and sit in a corner breathing fast. If we try to stop him or talk to him, he squeals and thrashes. I have talked to his therapist and doctors. I don't know what to do. How do you get a 4 yr old to… read more
He was referred to the school PIRT (preschool intervention referral team) by his teachers about his behavior troubles. They won't go for a full IEP because he's not disruptive and does not have an educational delay. His only real delay is communication skills which they say are not needed in preschool. We are requesting another evaluation under kindergarten standards. If they refuse, which they have done before, we are pushing for mitigation which means lawyer time. They have had copies of his diagnosis from the doctor since he started but is just now giving him a 504 plan due to behavior problems. It made me furious when they said all they need is a doctor's note with a diagnosis on it.
He does have a diagnosis. He was diagnosed at 3yrs old. The school still refuses to give him an IEP which is ridiculous. My other son with ASD LIVES off carbs but Aubry does not. Loves his veggies, fruits, lean meats, etc. His biggest challenge is communicating his emotions. He is getting better. I get down to his level and try to get him to talk instead of punishing his temper which my husband will do.
did you get a formal evaluation from this PIRT team ? That is absurd that communication skills would not be in the area of a PDD NOS_ Your son seems to have all the signs of ASD could be early you are seeing what they call Aspbergers- takes time to get a solid diagnosis but you have a bunch consistant right there - the EARLY ON intervetions the better the outcome and that is proven!

Secure a Written statement from the Doctors- to the School , have presented to the School, meet with the school and again ask for an IEP- if they refute it let them know that you are seeking leagal advice from a Advocate that just works on School cases for special needs individuals.
