Relocating South

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
DeWitt, NY

We are considering moving south to either Florida (Palm Beach area) or Charlotte NC. I'm looking to find out what high school and after age 21 care is like for severely autistic individuals. What is available in those areas?

I can tell you that if you are in the north stay there do not go south because services are far less. I lived in Florida and there is not much at all. The other thing is that if you already have SSI the rates will be far lower as well, so expect a few hundred different in the check. The southern states are far behind the north for services and then add in the medical care is not as good either you are better off staying in the north.

Always try to stat away from states with no state tax as well because that means less services. Also do not believe the cost if living in Florida is less because the only thing costing less is housing, but food gas and utilities are just as high and sometimes higher than the north,

North Carolina has good resources for schools and for after-school transition phase programs...if you do move to NC contact Duke University for Autism resources and medical issues related to Autism.. and as always the Autism Society Chapter for NC.. Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools are good for Autistic students..

I have a friend with a severely disabled daughter who lives in North Carolina and she says that many of their programs have been gutted in budget cuts. You might want to contact someone within the state's programs and ask about services and wait lists.

SSI is income based but your cost of living does make a difference. This is because if you are in a state where it costs you more to live that means you are bringing in less money so your rate is higher and you will get closer to the max. It is a federal program though

I make pretty much the same money as in Florida but get more for the kids up here.
