Getting Kids To School

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Ottawa, ON

how are all you moms out there, getting your asd kiddies to school? we live in a rural farm community and the kids mostly all take the bus, our 11 year old is super add, and has anxiety and panic disorder, we are unable to support him, getting to school, everything I try does not work, he is in tears yet again today, and was home all last week. what am I doing wrong?

If your son has an IEP, maybe the school can send a special bus for him so he does not have to ride on the big bus full of kids. By law the school must accommodate his needs (this may actually fall under 504/Disabilities and NOT Spec Ed); you may need to have a directive from your doctor stating due to his condition, he cannot tolerate the regular bus.

Another option is getting a Home Teacher from school. This would be for "medical necessity" if he can't attend school for medical reasons. This is used mainly for hospitalizations and things like that, but we got one for our son who qualified for Spec Ed under both Autism and Emotional Disturbance (anxiety, depression).

That said, my son is 12, and it is so hard getting him to school. He hates school, tho now he is in a Special Day Class (10 kids, 1 spec ed teacher, 2 aides, and a dedicated full time counselor), he is much happier. Still, he has stomach migraines, and he is home almost as much as he is at school.

Do you have it documented when they gave him the meds? File a complaint with the district, and also call your state Dept of Education. Let the school know they are in violation of his rights under IDEA. Find an Adovcate who works for a non-profit like DREDF. It is a ton of work... and a lot of threatening, which doesn't come naturally to me.

If he misses a lot of school because they cannot accommodate his issues, tell them they are in noncompliance with FAPE, Free Appropriate Public Education, and they will need to pay for Compensatory Education (private tutor or other remedy) if he is not keeping up.

Do you love your son? Then you clearly are the RIGHT parent for him. Don't doubt yourself! :)

You have gotten a lot of good advice here. Is he in a special need class? do they have them at his school if not where I live my child would be eligible to go to the one in the same county that does and they have to provide transportation. that being said, DON"T ever let what a system lacks question if your the right parent. You are your on here, you obviously love him. Sometimes the system and rude people can often make us parents question our parenting, but we are a special breed we deal with more than they probably ever will. Keep your chin up and keep fighting for you sons rights..(((HUGS))))

@getting kids to school- If your child has add, how about getting him a gameboy or something to keep him busy on a bus. We use to make up a little bag travel things for kids with add, to help keep them busy while they traveled on the bus. In any event, the schools need to accomodate your child. We have a law here in oregon called no child left behind. It means every child has the right to an education. Also, get it put in your sons IEP if it is not already. Another option would be to go to your primary doctor, and ask him to write up a letter about the need for transportation for your son's safety. the school should offer a short bus, taxi or educational assistant to ride with him. HOpe that helps.

I worked for the school district and special education departments in oregon. Fight for your childs transportation rights. They give taxi's to kids with behavior problems. They sure as heck should provide a small bus four a student with autism. Once they turn 18 they have a lift program here that picks my son up and takes him where he want to go. He just has to call in 1 day in advance.
