What All-natural Methods Has Anyone Had Success With For Calming, Reducing Agression? Oils? Supplements? I'm Open To Trying Anything!
A supplement called 5-HTP which we get from Sprouts has been a great help. It is a serotonin supplement so it helps with different areas such as sleep, appetite but the thing we started using it for is the affect of his mood. It sort of levels my son out.
Thank you :-)
Yes you just described my son he has had a lot of GI problems, constipation and yeast on his bottom since he is still in pull ups. Thank you I will read up on some others and see what I can find.
About half of people with autism have problems with aggression at some point.
The first step is always to figure out if there is a stress or fear or physical condition that is leading to the aggression. If there is an allergy or illness, for example, that is the best place to start.
A lot of ASD kids have ongoing issues with tummy ache, GI problems, and even yeast overgrowth in the stomach. The yeast can be very hard to get under control, and can lead to very challenging behaviors. (Yeast releases toxins directly into your system. People with ASD frequently have low stomach acid, so the yeast infection can get pretty severe).
If there is no physical problem, the next thing to look for is frustration, sensory issues, and sleeping problems.
Frustration can be as simple as kids who are having trouble communicating. Sensory issues are tougher, but there are some clear signals when a kid is hitting just for the sensory input.
Sleep is the only one of the issues that supplements can help with. We have had good luck with magnesium, zinc, and omega 3. Methyl B12 is also available in pill form, although a lot of it is lost in the digestion process.
You might have to try a bunch of different things, because so many kids are different. Our son did not respond well to iron supplement, but another child his age showed improvement in sleeping and in mood.
We have not had much luck with aromas and essential oils, but we have met other parents who had the opposite experience.
Don't be afraid to try a few different approaches, and spend a little time reading up on each.
Also, be careful not to get frustrated or angry. If you can stay calm in the face of bad behaviors, it gives you a better opportunity to change and redirect the outbursts.
Im trying Children's DHA right now, we just started it last week ill keep you posted. Im really looking for some good supplements to help balance my son :)
