Traveling Via Amtrak
Has anyone traveled on the Empire Builder Amtrak train with their autistic child? I am concerned the constant hum will bother him. It'll be a 24 hour trip. Does anybody have any tips on helping block out noises, a specific type… read more
My experience ha been different - I used to commute on Amtrak and had a very professional crew at all times. My son rode the train once and really enjoyed it, but if you're on the Acela at 120-140 mph, that noise my get to him. I would recommend headphones, and visit sensoryshield.com - they have a very interesting product coming out to help autists deal with mass transit. I don't believe it has hit the market yet, but I have been in touch with the CEO of the company, who is autistic herself. This may be that gem that we've all been looking for.
I don't have experience with that specific train but I did take my son on a 10 hour Amtrak ride to NYC last year. Poor Evan had difficulties from the minute the train pulled up to the station. The loud noises. The people. Having to stay seated in a cramped area for that long. It was a stressful experience for us and I will not be taking Evan on any train rides for quite some time. If this is the way you have to travel I would suggest noise reduction ear muffs, a weighted blanket and a lot of things to do!
