How Should I Handle My Son's Hyper-activity In The Early Morning?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 9 year old son has High Functioning Aspergers, ADHD, OCD, he wakes up HYPER! He wakes around 5am every morning, before anyone else is up, he turns on TV's, plays his Video games, fixes himself breakfast sometimes while leaving everything he touches in a disaster! The only way I can describe it is he is bouncing off the walls. He laughs at us when we try and discipline him. This behavior usually lasts until about 30 minutes after I give him his 54mg of Concerta, he then becomes very… read more

Have you had him perform some intense exercise right away in the morning? I'm thinking about taking my son out for a run first thing in the morning in about 1 year when he gets to be about 5 yo. I have been reading about this because I'm trying to figure out how to deal with my son once he starts school. Iread that in Japan they deal with hyperactivity with intense exercise. I can tell a huge difference in my son when he hasn't gotten t least an hour of "running free" in each day. I think I'm going to have to wear him out before he goes into school, so I'm just wondering if you've had any success with this in the past.

We have this problem too. One of my guys gets up and goes crazy in the mornings. Then his brother gets in on act because it looks like so much fun. We can't just get up and give his medicine earlier because then it wears off before the end of the school day.
Our discipline approach (and its not always a huge success but its our best idea so far) is to make him clean up his mess and if he won't or if he got into something he isn't allowed to play with then we take away a highly preferred item until he gets home from school. My thinking here is that he always asks for it after he's settled down and I calmly explain that he lost it because he did x this morning and he can have it back at such and such time. I tell him if he doesn't want his stuff in timeout then he shouldn't do those things in the morning. I don't expect the process of him connecting the dots to be quick but we are being very consistent and are seeing slow progress.

Thanks for all the responses, we will continue to try different things. I may change of his night routine to see if we can tire him out enough to sleep longer and give him a fun task with a time frame to do when he wakes. (safe, quiet task) I am most concerned for him and his brothers safety. It is like he is on a adrenaline rush, jumping, running, hollering.

This is my son too. Except I am trying to get mine to make his own breakfast! ;)
I talked to my son's pediatrician and said his Concerta works great but seems to wear off by 3pm when taken around 8am. She gave us an additional Rx for short-acting Ritalin to help from 3-8pm.
That way, we didn't have to wait so long in the morning to give him his Concerta,

My 8 year old is the same way. He is always the first one out of bed... usually 6:00 everyday. He is also very wound up in the mornings but he has learned he has to be quiet until at least 8:00. Try making him do exercise to release some energy - Daven jumps on the trampoline, does push-ups, runs up and down the driveway and things like this to get some excess energy out of his system.
