I Would Love To Hear From Parents Like Me Who Have Functionally Non-verbal Kids Who Are Using The IPad, What's Your Experience Has Been?
If you haven't gotten the Toy Story Read Along - U should it's FREE & kids love it & teachers love it for read along story time as well. Also, AutismXpress is great for teaching single word emotion expression to limited or non-verbal kids
That's great. I've worked w/many many kids on the severe end & the behavior like that is usually what I call "Communication Frustration" and the iPad gives kids like my son & your daughter a feeling of calm because they feel like they have more personal control and understanding and interaction with their environment with the iPad. If she is non-verbal or severely limited verbally might I suggest the Lingraphica apps that are free. They are great & have really helped a lot of non-verbal Autistic kids with language development especially if you child has an actual oral motor problem as part of their lack of speech.
I just started my daughter on one a couple of weeks ago. She shows more interests in puzzles and pictures on the IPad than up close. Which is why I purchased the IPad. Anything my daughter shows interests in is a huge positive. I have a cousin that has autism and she loves being on the computer, used to be non verbal and is now speaking. My daughter always pinches, hits and bites herself while having to do learning activities. She does it less on the IPad. And another plus is being able to download pecs, puzzles and all kinds of apps for autism. So far she is already doing more at home without it having to feel like work. It's great.
we are just starting @ school
the kids love the iPad and so do I! We still using pecs boards in class..books & 4 schedule but the ipad rules..for communication, games & stories..hurts my feelings a tad but seems most will opt for a book on ipad over having me read aloud. love the iPad.
