Does Anyone Take Their High Functioning ASD Kids To Counceling? It Is The First Step They Do In This State But Is It Really Effective?

So I was told by a Counselor to not treat my youngest like she has Autism or any sensory issue. I know you can take this many ways. But after asking many questions of what she means, I concluded that she mean not doing sensory intergration or live with a sensory diet. Do not consider what sensory input is complicating the situation. Do not provide the sensory supports that helps them calm down. She suggest just more displine and lots of it. SOOO I guess she thinks at least High Functions… read more

It seems this therapist has little or no knowledge of PDD NOS or Autism spectrum. "If you were a better parent she would be a better child" is insane. I take my daughter to counseling- It really doesn't do much good- but her meltdowns were so bad she was head banging and bruised herself. A counselor on your side with info about your child is invaluable in those situations. That said you need a sympathetic counselor who understands what you are up against and works with you and not against you!

@A MyAutismTeam Member Yeah I agree the whole world not going to change for them. We need to teach them appropriate stragies with coping and adapting to the world. She was literally talking about taking that all away and expecting to just behave and never have meltdowns.

My oldest now sometimes can recongize being overloaded and when given the choice of a loud overcrowded place to quiet zone she will choose that instead of the meltdown. I also seen this a Christmas with a Therapy swing at Grandma's in another state. She would get fustrated swing for a minute then rejoin the group. It amazing how many less tantrum there were by just giving her the tools to cope.

Guess I mainly looking for suggession if it is worth looking for another conselor or trying a different therapy method.

Thanks for all your help! Sounds like others have found Some help with Counseling.

Our State seems to be way behind in the Autistic Therapys. But reading other's story I know I not alone in this problem. So they don't have a ABA program by that name here. It seems like they just of Development Therapy that use to be only run with 18 year olds and no education and very little training. They have agencys running them and our agency says they use a lot of ABA in their treatment. Starting July they are reforming the whole states programs to ABI and DT changing into HI and HS Hiblitation Intervention and Hibilation Supports. HI is to teach new skills with a College Degree and HS is to reinforce learns skills with 18 year old. This is a better system but sounds like other states are doing better.

In otherwords, I still am kind of lost. I do get that each child is different and needs different things. I do know that OT with Sensory Intergation is key in being included in everything. I still am new to the ASD community so don't all that is out there of possiblities. It will be easier to find what works to know the possiblities.

I will changes Counselors but I think I will not bother with another unless they specialize in Autisic or Sensory Kids. My oldest daughter therapist took a special interest in ASD and SP kids and even takes training class to understand more about their conditions. She works with our OT and together have made a huge difference in my oldest life. She doesn't take siblings which is normally suggest I guess with conselors.

Then, I have to think what WAY to stop the old conselor is best for my child. Just don't go back or go one more time letting her know that it is the last time before the appointment? It also is complicated because she is a trantrum the whole session last time so I don't want to give her the message that she can get of things by throwing a trantrum. And I don't want a possible harmful thinking to be guiding my child one more time either. I also found you have to listen to your child as well. It might not a just be coincidence that they throw a trantrum everytime you go certain places. Or that they have ASD and trantrum and meltdowns happen with small unimportant changes. It might be their way of communicating that something is actually wrong with the place. ---That is another story about my oldest worst trantrum and a daycare who show a scarey children's movie to 5yr and under. Many 10 years without ASD can't sleep after it. Just makes me shutter to think of what else happened in 1.5 yrs that she couldn't tell me about. ---So I found you have to not just assume it is behavior we working on and get behind why they are happening.
