California Paid Family Leave
Does anyone in California know if you can take a paid family leave to care for your child while going through the autism diagnosis process?
I’m going threw this right now. I work for Amazon I have taken a FMLA for my theee Years who has been diagonesed for autism spectrum. He is diagnosed for speech and language and I went threw kaiser to get him in a program I prayed on. Im a single mother but they are asking me to bring a form in from his doctor for FMLA to hr which I will be doing tomorrow and then for paid family leave they asked for papers from his doctor as well so hopefully it will all work out and I’ll be ok for four weeks until my son goes full schedule to school.
This is a great question and long ago I probably would not have been able to answer this, but today here in Chicago....our police department decided that if an employee has sick time available, they can now use it as family sick time during a medical issue for a family member. I know it is not California, but I would check with the HR Benefits department to see if they have something similar to this. When the department decided to do this, for those of us who do not abuse our sick time benefit, it came in handy when my twin granddaughters became ill and needed me there along with my daughter to assist them. Check it out...you never know.
Any updates to this question? Really looking for the answer...not really for the autism diagnosis process but for when traumatic events happen to your autistic kids. I imagine the answer is the same though...
@A MyAutismTeam Member asked about this very thing in HR last year and it did not look promising. According to them, the parents can take FMLA for a child being born, a medical problem of their own, but I do believe that you will need to have had the autism diagnosis already in hand to provide to HR for processing.
Also know that it is illegal to retaliate against someone who knows the laws.
