Getting A Boy Into Underwear?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Sudbury, ON

my son has a moderate level of sensory sensitivity, has had toileting issues for some time, but now he is mostly 'trained' however the greatest challenge is getting him to wear underwear. any suggestions? also, he has a little brother who still needs pullups, so they are in the house for another year or so.

Have you taken him to let him pick any out a pattern and a material he likes? maybe he might like loose boxers instead of tight underwear. I know my son prefers loose underwear that are thin in material.

Oh my gosh - my 10 year old STILL won't wear underwear...he doesn't like the way they feel under his pants...for now, I am not fighting it (pick your battles), but he starts middle school next year and will have to change for gym, I think that will "cure" him of the underwear dilema!! Keep you posted....ps we also had toileting issues, and they almost completely resolved at age 9 including the night time issues.

my son just started wearing underwear at the age of 12! I think CindyMBC was correct that middle school gym class was a big factor. He will only wear boxers, not briefs or boxer briefs. I buy the brushed cotton ones because they are softer. I also buy the ones with the covered waistband because the feel of the elastic against his skin was one of the reasons he wouldn't wear any. Now that i found the right ones, he wears them every day finally!

my boys are such stark contrasts of each other, he's always had a 'vice' to something, first bottle then soother, stuffy and diapers.. I am lucky that they are so typical that the advice is everywhere! his little brother isn't ready for toileting but prefers underwear lol...
