Has Anyone Had To Have Their ASD Child Repeat Pre-K More Than Two Times?
My little Angel-Fire will be 5 this May. I just received another application from his school, requesting his enrollment information for the upcoming school year, beginning in Fall. Normal procedures, right? Heres the concern: APPLICATION for PRE-KINDERGARTEN SERVICES for the 2013/14 SCHOOL YEAR. Still nothing to be concerned with, right?
THIS WILL BE MY SON'S THIRD (3RD) FULL YEAR OF PRE-K!
Ok, I know he isn't ready to move up to Kindergarten just yet and I'm ready to do whatever it takes to⦠read more
If the cutoff is in the early summer (June or July), it's not unusual for kids with late spring birthdays to be "red-shirted". You definitely don't want a kid with ASD to be one of the youngest in his/her class. I'm lucky that my DD has her birthday a couple months after the cutoff, so she will be one of the older ones in her class.
Obviously whatever is happening is not working. I would look at everything (people involved, current therapies or new, the school etc.) and figure out what needs to change to achieve these goals. My daughter had 3 years of Pre K, but only because she started early and it was an advantage for her (academically she's above her peers). Biomedical intervention was HUGE for my daughter. For her it was difficult to learn because her brain was too foggy from high yeast and her body was not absorbing the nutrients she needed. Also I sware by the LEAP DVD's. The Letter Factory was always her favorite and taught her so much!
As a parent, who has been fighting the school system, to stop pushing him through the school system because of age, and not knowledge, let him stay in preschool, if he doesnt know what you feel to be appropriate for the next level. If you arent sure, what the expectations should be, go on to your states education website and start searching...Dont let him be pushed to the next level because of age. In my case they were using words like he had reading rediness and he didnt, so it threw up a flag for me. I would much rather have a child repeat the grade until they had learned the curriculum, then push them forward without having the proper building blocks to continue learning. Struggling can make it worse as the child gets older, and they start to realize they dont know what their peers do.. And that i can tell you from experience is heartbreaking to see
I had my son stay in preschool an extra year and i wished i haddent. kindergarden isnt that much harder. Is your child unable to keep up with the others in preschool? is he ebing worked with alot mroe then the others? If he was already held back one I would be looking at his therapy and what ever the service plan that is made up for him . appearently they need to double everything seeing he is still having probelems enough to not be able to move on to the next grade. If they want to hold him back i would make sure there is a Really really good reason why an then they been show how an what twill be provided to support an help your child acheve his goals. I would ask for the moon and push for it. The school get goverment help to provide for our children so the money might as well be used an help your child..learn,and feel good about himself. Though make sure you as a parent know what your child can and cant do ..dont depend on everyone elses to really care. they will have anoyhter group of kids the next year and then the next..you only have that one child to focus in one an you are their parent they depend on you to really do your best. ask many many questions if have to ..to everyone! other parents also other therapist, doctors, get educated over things they effect your childs life.
My son was in pre-k for 2 years and was then moved to kindergarten because of his birthday but I would much rather him be in pre-k. There are so many things they are doing in K that just do not apply to him and he gets extremely frustrated. That said, it is whatever is best for your child. If you think he is ready for Kindergarten request an IEP meeting.
