Is Your Autism Diagnosis Valid?
Let’s separate fact from fiction regarding bogus Autism diagnosises and the apparent ignorance of many as it relates to the validity of them. Let me educate you please!!! I need to share some things that I have learned by speaking with multiple professionals and people who treat children and adults on the Autism spectrum as well as over 100 parents who I have met in person through the Autism Treatment Center of America
An Autism diagnosis is not something a parent seeks out in order to get… read more
Now on the PDD-NOS...which is a diagnosis...page 74 of the DSM-IV-TR,299.80...PDD-NOS= Pevasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified(INCLUDING ATYPICAL AUTISM) This category is used when there is a severe and pervasive impairment in the development of reciprocal social interaction associated with impairment in either verbal or non-verbal communication skills or the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests, and activities, BUT THE CRITERIA ARE NOT MET for a specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder,Schizophrenia,Schizotypical Personality Disorder,or Avoidant Personality Disorder.FOR EXAMPLE THIS CATEGORY INCLUDES ATYPICAL AUTISM. (The individual does not meet the criteria for AUTISTIC DISORDER on page 75.)BECAUSE:OF THE LATE AGE at ONSET,atypical symptomatology OR subthreshold symptomatology OR ALL of these. That is your answer and DR. S. said so! Return to the doctor who said the individual was PDD-NOS-299.80.Their job is to explain this info to you. :) Regards, :)
Hello, I am jumping in here...so forgive me..I am an autism doctor and specialist....I am also one of the past teachers of doctors.... I had to go to school for many years....to interpret and train about autism and ASD tests. Can parents interpret? The answer is no... not legally, unless you are a professional.Parents like me and you... yes, do provide lots of info and do know their children! An example would be the misinterpretation of the questions on the M-Chat which are often misunderstood and therefore answered incorrectly. Training is required most of the time by the screen/test.No insults intended. I am also a screen developer. The AMA strongly suggests that the peditrician does initial screening twice before the age of 2 years.
wide spectrum and no nobody I know stands in line to be picked. Its not an easy road to be on. But if the diagnosis is diagnosed its there. Every child is different female to male on every diagnosis on the spectrum.
A+, very good! Where are you and what is your profession, may I ask? You are a very smart mom! We almost agree on everything but I need clarification from you, please, on one point. Are the Multidisciplinary Teams you speak of... in the public school or in the medical field? Maybe universities? Public schools here, do not diagnose. Our schools find eligibilities. Are you in Illinois? Please tell me more.
Thank you everyone for your responses as you are helping me understand what I'm trying to say and communicate here more clearly! I'm just tired of individual people asking me - "oh, the nuerologist didn't think your son was autistic at age 4 so he's not!" after we have been through the full multidisciplinary team diagnostics who ran the testing to place him on the spectrum. If he wasn't on it - they would have been the best people to tell me so! If you get the full range of testing done with a multidisciplinary team, no one can debunk that by their personal or professional opinion. :)
