What Kind Of Dog Works Best For Asperger's?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Springfield, MO

I am wanting to get a dog for my son. I looked up the best breeds for children and one of them is an English Bulldog. (I really like their personalities) My question is, if I can't get a therapy dog for my son, what breeds are good for kids with Aspergers?

Bichon Frise. We weren't looking but... We used to foster dogs and that's how we became foster failures with our family pet. We didn't know his breed at the time, but we are so glad we found each other. He is such a good fit for our family...son. He is very affectionate and playful. He doesn't cause allergies for either of us, which has been an issue for me in the past. Our son didn't show much interest, but our Bichon acts as if he knows how important interaction is for our son. He tries endlessly to play with him and recently our son has started to respond. Our son has started to run, chase and cuddle with our Bichon. He asks for him at nap and bedtime. He looks for him in the morning. It has taken our pet almost a year to accomplish this interaction, but his persistence never wavers. He goes to the bathroom with our son daily and chases him when he comes out. He sits beside our son no matter what he's doing and tries endlessly to keep his attention.

The bizarre thing is that my son often bites his skin on his finger and our Bichon licks his feet to no end. The vet told me it probably started as a foot allergy from the grass and now it seems to have become a habit. I have to remind them both daily to stop. They are a pair, but they're both doing much better in that department.

What a blessing our Bichon is to our family.

we have a 9 yr old son with pdd-nos and adhd , with that said we have the most wonderful dog in the world for him . he is a English Mastiff . he is a extra large dog but my son can do anything to him sleep with him , the dog watches out for him .Harley ( the dog ) fallows Dalton (my son) ever where he goes . Harley even puts his arm around Dalton when they are laying on the floor together . i would most definitely recommend the Gentle Giant bread English Mastiffs

We rescued a pitbull/german shepherd mix puppy from a shelter and he is the BEST dog. He doesn't bark, he is incredibly loving, and he has the patience of a SAINT. He has not once snapped at our son and he has been tormented by him! Our son loves him, but isn't good with appropriate play-- he has poked him in the eye, pulled his tail, pinched him, hit him..and the dog has done nothing-- even when he our son hurts him on accident. He has been an invaluable addition to our family!

We have a Boston Terrie/Pug mix and her temperament is absolutely beautiful with my son... She lets him do anything to her and is SO sweet. I think a Pug is a great dog!
