Does Anyone Have Any Experience With A Waldorf Or Maybe A Montessori School?
My son is high functioning leaning toward Aspergers, he has no friends and it is breaking my heart. I am considering a Montessori or Waldorf school where they would have smaller classrooms and where the children might be more inclusive, where they might make more of an effort to be his friend. Though if he is the one who is not interested in developing friendships then it will not be worth moving him out of public school.
I have heard that about a social skills group at VIA, I should check it out, but I have been lazy lately.
My Asperger's child is in a montessori program. It is K-12 and a charter school. In some things he does great but in others not so much. He loves that he doesn't have to learn a certain subject at a designated time but he struggles to self motivate and do his math work. He is thriving in the sciences but struggles with not bothering his friends who are trying to work.
Grrr. That just makes me sad. In my area we have many organizations that have social skills groups with kiddos on the spectrum as well as other peers without ASD. In fact, I teach a social skills group in which we work on how to make friends, what is appropriate and not appropriate to say, etc. See if you can locate one of these groups. Changing schools may or may not be the answer.
We tried a great Montessori school when our son (also high functioning in the spectrum) was asked to leave his daycare just under age three. It was a huge help for a period, he thrived, then he got to where he needed to advance to the next room and he had hit a wall totally. The teaching method was great at first, and things like pincer grips, life skills, dressing and such he took to but when it got into multiple step commands of the older classes he got frustrated, became a discipline problem because of his frustration, they gave us the boot. He does not have great processing of multiple commands, give him three two step commands to follow and he is great, name all six at once and he becomes lost. He did not fit their paradigm of teaching so rather than explain things in away he can understand - they stuck to the book and we left. He went to a new school and did great, he is mainstreamed now in kindergarten with a TSS and is doing fantastic, Montessori did not help over all, they might have set him back a bit...
