Behavioral Issues At School Involving Oral Noises. Any Suggestions?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 7 with high functioning Asberger's recently he has been having difficulty with oral noises when things are very quiet. This is especially problematic at school for him. The teacher has started removing him from the classroom as a disciplinary measure. I've tried sugarless gum, but he says the noises have "tricked the gum and found a way out". I'm not even sure he is aware of it. I've called the school about the discipline issue, but he feels badly for disrupting class. I've also… read more

lollipops? a chewy tube (though that can be ostracizing in a class), what about different types of gum... from mint to other flavors to "wake up" his mouth? Would his teacher give him pretzels or something crunchy to munch on? He really shouldn't be disciplined for a stim. Autistic children have to stim, we just have to help them make it more appropriate so they can function in the classroom. It's like getting mad at a person with one leg who limps!

Why does he think he is making the noises? Is it too quiet? Maybe he needs to be able to listen to music on headphones so that he can focus. Is it too noisy? Assignment too hard or easy? My experience with noises are that they are soothing to the one making them. Is there is a way to sooth himself in a more acceptable manner? I have also written social stories with cartooning to show the one making the noises how it affects others and different ways to handle the situation... ie. asking for a break and making the noises outside and then returning. I also finds it really helps if the other kids understand that he is not doing it to annoy them but because it makes him feel better. They can help him stop with a simple hand signal to let him know that it is bothering them.

I agree, I did discuss this with the teacher it seems he wasn't disciplined for the stim. He actually told the teacher she had to give him gum or he would make mouth noises. My 7 yr old is extorting his teacher UGH!!! Anyway, I spoke with him about that one and hopeully it won't happen again, but the pretzel idea or something crunchy is a good one. I'll see what I can do about it.
