Son Nonverbal Finds It Hard To Wait

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Tried stickers and drawing and writing numbers but only takes five minutes. He doesn’t want to listen to music or dance. How do you get him to wait half hour or hour
iPad no good

When I was not speaking, my mother used word magnets on the fridge or magnets with pictures of the item the child wanted. This was in the 2000s when technology was not used in my household.

Hi:) Not sure if this will work but my daughter loves looking at photos & videos on my phone.
I show them to her while we’re waiting at Dr. appts.
Maybe you could create a photo album for him.
The other thing I thought was; Are they making it known to him that he will be going soon but then making him wait until staff is available. If that’s the case then they should wait to tell him until they're ready to go.

Hi 👋
What is it you are wanting him to wait for ? With my son (also non verbal ) it always depends on what he wants or level of understanding.
How old is you son ? What’s his development like ? My son is 6 and developing at the age of around 3 so I have to remember his level of understanding is at a 3 year old not 6 x

I have a 12 year old Tween and a 9 year old son who both are 100% Non-Verbal. My 12 has no patience and always wanting attention or cannot wait to be in the spotlight. I tell tell her, and made a sign that hangs on her wall that says “You are 100% Like Barbie, always striving to be center of attention and always being in the Spotlight. Both of them wears disposable Diapers 24/7/365. My 12 year has to wear a Specialized Footed Jumpsuit that covers 90% of her body. The jumpsuit fits perfectly and fits snug and comfortable. She is a handful and it’s amazing how intelligent she is using electronics like her IPhone 16 Pro and her IPad. She does everything with her IPhone 16!Max. Both of them sleeps in a Specialized Cribs that are padded all the way around so they cannot hurt themselves. Plus their Cribs has a hood that prevents either one escaping from their Cribs. My 9 year also wears a Footed Jumpsuit that is made from the same material as my 12 year old. Their footed Jumpsuits are made from SPIO Works. I cannot believe how many diapers they use in a single day. So I totally understand how a Non-Verbal cannot wait and has no patience. I believe that they don’t have the Cognitive Ability to understand what wait means nor they don’t know how to interpret Patience. It’s a On going process with both of my children, especially my. 12 year old. She’ll not wait to get dressed, she would rather run throughout the house wearing just her diaper. My 9 year loves to lay around in the house wearing nothing but his Diaper too. I thinks it’s a Sensory Disorder thing for both of them.

Hi he is 23 years old and nonverbal
He can’t wait to go out for walk but he has to wait for staff to arrive and so two people can safely take him out and two staff can stay at Care Home for other students. Just he can’t wait for half hour or hour
