A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Cleveland, OH

So ive noticed that everything i do my son will go behind me and redo it his way. Everything i do thats not his way annoys him so bad and he’s fussy about it not being his way. I can close the cabinet and he’ll stop whatever he’s doin to come open and close it again but he’s so angry about it. Is this Ocd? Its getting worse as he gets older. Any tips?

With my guy, I've found that OCD is a subset of his anxiety but can manifest in different and changing ways which is a little different that usual OCD. He doesn't stay on the same OCD behavior for long periods of time. Cupboard doors may have to be open for a few months and then they all have to be closed for a few months.... or all the lights have to be on and then suddenly, all of them have to be off. I think it's a way of modifying the sensory issues or feeling "control" (which OCD tries to imitate)

On the same page as dorothy. Even while it is sounding OCD in nature, that doesn’t say whether it is causative or co-occuring in nature. Often stuff happens that can be dx to acquire a treatment, but underlying need or co-occuring issue goes unacknowledged.

My son does this as well, it definitely is OCD in my son's case. I cannot say for sure if it is the same for your son, but it may very well be. Medication and ABA has helped alot

I'm so sorry I do not have experience with that. Maybe you could bring that up with your son doctor.

@A MyAutismTeam Member my son's ocd is so bad he has to take medicine for it. He washes his hands to the point that it looks like he's wearing red gloves. He now puts an emmoilient on them at night and wears cotton gloves to bed.
